Best Paper Award, Software Technology Track – HICSS-59 (2026)
Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences · January 2026The paper “Developer Productivity With and Without GitHub Copilot: A Longitudinal Mixed-Methods Case Study”, which I co-authored with Viktoria Stray, Elias Goldmann Brandtzæg, Astri Barbala, and Nils Brede Moe, received the Best Paper Award in the Software Technology Track at the 59th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-59) in January 2026.
The study examines the real-world impact of GitHub Copilot on developer activity and perceived productivity at NAV IT, a large public-sector agile organization. We analyzed 26,317 commits from 703 GitHub repositories over a two-year period, comparing commit-based activity metrics for 25 Copilot users and 14 non-users, complemented by survey responses and 13 interviews. Copilot users were consistently more active than non-users – even before the tool was introduced – and we found no statistically significant change in their commit-based activity after adoption, suggesting a discrepancy between commit-based metrics and developers’ subjective experience of productivity.
